2013 – Another year come and gone

It started out pretty normal, ‘bout like any other year
Family gatherings, black eyed peas and lots of New Year’s cheer

Goals were set and some resolutions were made
There were pounds to lose and debts needing paid

But only three days in, we got a frantic call
Little sister’s been in a wreck, lucky to be alive at all

Our prayers were answered within a few days
She slowly woke up out of that bell ringing daze

Her memory came back and she lost very little
A few weeks later she even started growing in the middle

Not to be outdone, my brother fathered another child
Six kids at Christmas this year, wow, things could get wild

Mom’s doing good, she’s working and happily wed
Now if she only had room for another flower bed

Nick and James are working and doing just fine
In fact, James will be hitched next year by this time

I guess that leaves me the only sibling without a ring
No wonder Janna keeps pointing out women with bling

As I look back on the year I have a couple more topics to discuss
My book was published this year, but dad … Well, he is no longer with us

In June we found out cancer had taken over his pancreas and liver
Two months later we lost our father, our friend, our life-giver

God gave us time to say our goodbyes and let dad know he was loved
We’re comforted by knowing he’s farming up there in Heaven above

As the year comes to a close and 2014 nears
I have to admit, it’s sometimes hard to hold back the tears

I suppose 2013 wasn’t really much different than any other year we’ve had
God gave us some good times, and He gave us some bad

If we crossed paths in 2013 …  I want you to know I’m grateful for the time we had
God Bless You, Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, & “I miss you dad.”
